Solution: This device cannot load a driver

This device cannot load a driver: Windows Security blocks a driver from loading on this device. This error is called “A Driver Cannot Be Loaded on This Device”.

This error is most commonly caused by the Memory Integrity feature, which prevents drivers from functioning or making changes to the system. This problem could also be caused by corrupted or out-of date device drivers.

The “A Driver Could Not Load on this Device” error can be fixed by disabling the Memory Integrity function from Settings, and then restarting the device. Similarly, you can restore the functionality of your device by updating the device drivers.

If the problem persists, the following solutions can be used to fix the device driver not loading error.

Deactivate the Memory Integrity Feature

Memory Integrity is a security function that isolates the core of your device and blocks malicious software from running high-level code in it. This feature can be disabled to allow the device drivers to run again normally.

  • To disable the memory integrity function:
  • To open Settings, press the Windows key +I
  • Click on Windows Security in the Privacy & Security Tab.
  • To open Windows Security, click on the Open Windows Security link
  • Alternative, expand the Systems Tray from the taskbar. Click on the blue shield icon for Windows Security.
  • Click on the Device Safety tab
  • Click on Core isolating details in the Core isolation section
  • In Memory Integrity you can disable the feature by clicking on the blue toggle switch
  • To make the changes, restart your device

Warning: Disabling this feature could expose your device to malicious software.

Perform a System Restore

The system restore procedure may be able to resolve the problem if the system still displays the error. System restore reverses any changes to the system and returns it to its previous stable state.

  • To perform a system restoration in your device:
  • Open Run
  • To open a command prompt, type cmd
  • To open System Restore, type in command.
  • Click Next in the System Restore window.
  • If you choose Select a different restoration point and then click on Next again
  • To restore the system, click on Finish

During this time, your device will reboot. Save any work and close all applications before you proceed with system restore.

Rollback/Update affected drivers

If the problem persists, updating your device drivers could be the solution. You can also update the device drivers to make your device’s hardware run more smoothly.

Device Manager

  • To update your device drivers from device manger:
  • To open Run, press the Windows key + R.
  • To open Device manager, type devmgmt.msc
  • Go to Device Manager and locate the driver that is causing your issue
  • Right-click on it, and choose Update driver
  • Next, choose Search automatically to find drivers
  • After the update is complete, restart your device

Note: You can find the driver by hovering over the yellow exclamation marker.

Windows Update

You can also download Windows Update to update out-of-date drivers.

  • Open Settings
  • Click on the Windows update tab, and then click on Advanced Options
  • Scroll down to click Optional Updates
  • In the Driver updates section choose the drivers that you wish to update, then click the Download and install button
  • After the update is complete, restart your device
  • To remove the affected drivers
  • Open Device Manager
  • Right-click on the driver in question and choose Properties
  • Click on the Driver tab in the new window and then click on Rollback Driver.
  • Click on Yes to select the reason you want to roll back the driver.
  • Now, the driver will be restored to an earlier version
  • The Roll Back option may not be available or greyed out. This means that your device doesn’t have an older version of the driver. This can be fixed by checking the driver tab and downloading a previous version from manufacturer’s website.
  • After downloading the driver, you can roll it back from the device manager.

Reinstall Affected Drivers

  • Take a backup before you uninstall the driver from your device.
  • Reinstalling the affected drivers can be a solution if updating and rolling back drivers has not solved the problem. Reinstall the affected driver
  • Open Device Manager
  • Right-click the driver in question and choose Uninstall
  • Follow the prompts on the screen to continue with the uninstallation process
  • To make the changes, restart your device

If they are generic drivers, they will be reinstalled automatically after the device boots. If you do not have the drivers installed automatically, then you will need to visit the support page to download them and install them on your device.

Register Values Can Be Deleted

Registry files can sometimes cause disruption and render the device driver inoperable. This error message may be caused by the registry values for Upperfilters or Lowerfilters.

Before you delete registry values, please first:

  • Open Device Manager
  • Right-click on the driver in question and click Properties
  • Click on the Details tab.
  • Property :click on the drop-down menu and choose Class Guid
  • Right-click to To copy the Class Guid value
  • To now, open the Registry Editor
  • Open Run
  • Enter key and type regedit
  • Copy and paste the following in the address bar of the registry editor: Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\
  • Also Paste the Class Guid value into the address bar. Then, press the Enter key.
  • Delete the Lower filters, and Values
  • When prompted, select Yes to confirm
  • After deleting the values, restart your device

It is a good practice to back up your registry before you make any changes. Backups of the registry allow you to restore your system to its previous state in the event of an error.
