Excel Find Function Not Working? Best Ways to Fix it

Excel Find Function Not Working : It is the Findfunction in Excel is an Excel word function which returns the location of a specified character within a cell. Since the function can be difficult to operate, many new Excel users face difficulties using this Find function.

It is important to note that the Find function is case-sensitive by its nature. This means that you must be able to match the case of the character you’d like returns the results to. If you don’t match your case may run into the #VALUE! Error. There are other errors that are rookie like this that could cause issues while using this Find function.

Use Proper Syntax

If you do not utilize proper syntax when you enter the function FIND, you’ll be confronted with the #NAME? error code. The formula for FIND functions is described in the following format:

=FIND(find_text, within_text, [start-num])

You could either reference an area or type in text instead the “find_text”. If you’ve entered text ensure that you enter it in two quotes. In the same way, you should make use of the commas to break up your arguments.

In this instance we put the value of the find_text as I. Because we did not wrap it in double quotation marks, Excel triggered the #NAME? error.

To resolve this issue, type the text inside double quotes. The FIND function returns one since”I” is the only letter that appears “I” appears only once in “Image”.

Recheck Your Formula

It is possible that you entered an error in the find_text field. If Excel is unable to locate what you’re looking for within the cell’s location in the set it will show the following error message: #VALUE! error.

Review your formula to determine whether you’ve entered correctly your values. If your formula uses a different format for your calculation, alter it to be in line with the case.

The search_text number by entering “A” in the grid above. The FIND function will search at this particular character A2 which means “apple”. Since the format for”a”, the character “a” is different, the FIND function won’t be able to work.

This error can be fixed by changing the spelling of the find_text in the form of “a”.

Change start-num Value

You can include a start-number value to the end of the FIND formula. This will indicate a place in the character Excel will begin looking for the value you have set. If you’ve entered a start-number value that is prior to the character you’ve set, Excel will not register the character.

In this case, we’ve entered our formula to determine the amount of instances”a “a” has been repeated in the apple. However, we’ve set our starting-num amount to 2 which is the number immediately after “a” in the value. Excel is unable to locate “a” in the remaining text, so it displays the #VALUE! error.

To address this issue to fix this, we can alter the start-number value to 1. But, you may also opt not to enter any value at all since Excel will set default values for the starting-num number to 1.

If you’re having difficulty using the FIND function of Excel You can always search for it using the Find command. It is possible to set your Find option to match Case and Match the entire cell contents with the values that you enter.
